Twenty years ago the idea of topical peptides for youthful skin was just an idea. Fast forward to today and the use of topical peptides for youthful skin is a reality. This article will help you understand what peptides are and how they can be used to reverse the aging of your skin.
There are three main factors that damage your skin. They are:
- Sun Exposure
- Air Pollution
- Advanced Glycation End Products or AGEs
Most people understand how sun exposure and air pollution can potential damage your skin. What is poorly understood are AGEs. These form when glucose attaches itself to protein and fats resulting in a very destructive molecule that ages your body.
I’ll do a separate article on AGEs but understand that the standard American diet creates these Advanced Glycation End Products that cause our skin to age faster than it should.
Topical Peptides for Youthful Skin
Peptides are naturally present in young skin. And as we age these peptides decrease in number.
Peptides are fragments of proteins and are made up of amino acids. When these peptides are combined in certain ways, they make specific proteins that are needed to promote growth, organization, and maintenance of your skin cells.
Over the last 20 years scientists have discovered specific peptides called growth factors. Growth factors work to repair and reverse aging and environmentally damaged skin.
Here’s work they work:
-
When your skin is damaged your skin releases these natural growth factors to initiate and coordinate the repair process.
-
These growth factors communicate with keratinocytes and fibroblasts within your skin to build new collagen and skin cells. And repair DNA damage so that cells replicate properly.
Scientists have currently identified five key growth factors. They are:
-
Fibroblast Growth Factor or FGF – These peptides stimulate your dermal fibroblasts to help rebuild the components of your skin matrix. This includes collagen, elastin, and fibronectin.
-
Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor or VEGF – These peptides boost the deliver of nutrients and oxygen to help speed tissue repair.
-
Acidic Fibroblast Growth Factor or AFGF – These peptides stimulate your epidermal keratinocytes to renew the skin’s surface.
-
Epidermal Growth Factor or EFG – These peptides act like antioxidants to less the effects of inflammation and oxidative stress when your skin has been damaged.
-
Insulin-like Growth Factor or IGF-1 – These peptides trigger the production of new collagen as well as protect it from enzymes like collagenase that try to breakdown collagen material.
Two Plant Extracts Contain Peptides for Youthful Skin
There are more than two plant extracts that help provide peptides for youthful skin. However, for this articles we’re going to focus on two recent discoveries.
Sea Fennel – This is a flowering plant that thrives in the coastal areas of Europe. The stem cells of this plant have a remarkable effect on aged human skin.
When compared to untreated controls, those treated with this peptide extract had a 120% increase in the viability of skin cells. This resulted in increasing the density and thickness of the epidermis. And the extract-treated group experienced faster epidermal regeneration.
To further test this 12 healthy people were subjected to a toxic protocol designed to induce damage to the epidermis. When compared to the placebo group, those treated with sea funnel extract had significantly faster recovery of epidermal function and structure.
Additionally, the researchers noted improvements in skin tone, firmness, and radiance.
Date Palm Extract – This plant is native to southern Asia and North Africa. Through a combination of polyphenols, tannins, and carotenoids, this peptide helps initiate anti-inflammatory activity.
For many people with excessive sun exposure, hyperpigmentation is a common skin disorder. The pigment melanin is produced in excessive amounts resulting in age spots, dark patches, and melasma.
In a clinical trial, female participants applied a facial cream with date palm extract. They did this for 8 weeks. By the end of the clinical trial there was a 25% reduction in melanin output, which lightened the skin.
Also noted was an increase in skin elasticity and hydration to provide better tone and younger looking skin.
Date palm fruit extract has also worked well in addressing wrinkles. In other study, were the participants applied date palm extract twice per day for 5 weeks, there was a 27.6% reduction in wrinkles.
Conclusions
Because the care of your skin is a multi-billion dollar industry, there will be new discoveries in this area of using peptide for youthful skin.
Today I’ve presented two peptides that have shown remarkable potential in reversing the aging of your skin. As you come across companies that promote others types of peptides, my suggestion would be to do a quick Google search to see if there are any valid clinical studies that demonstrate their effectiveness in helping to address skin issues.
Focus on how these potential peptides stimulate one or more of the five key growth factors needed to maintain healthy and vibrant skin.
