I had a potential new client call me the other day to talk about his health. I’m not going to go into detail except to say this:
At 5′ 6” he weighed 300 pounds and he made a comment on why God would allow us to suffer poor health.
As soon as his words came out of his mouth I thought of Caleb from the Old Testament. How at the age of 84 he was just as healthy as he was at age 40.
What was Caleb’s secret? His diet.
Which brings me to the “Original Whole30 Program.”
The current Whole30 Program is the eliminate of any foods that contain allergens. It’s not a vegetarian diet but it does emphasize fruits and vegetables.
Original Whole30
While the “Original Whole30” program most likely predates the example I’m about to give you, I think you’ll understand what I’m trying to share.
If you’ve ever read the Book of Daniel from the Bible’s Old Testament, there is a section of Scripture that’s key to this whole issue of food choices.
Here’s the backstory (Daniel Chapter 1):
King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon laid siege to Jerusalem and capture the Israeli people and all their possessions. As he brought back the captive he separated out the “strong, healthy, and good-looking young men” to be put into service for the royal palace.
Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Arariah were four of the young men chosen. If you grew up in the church you most likely know these 4 as Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego.
Now the chief of staff for King Nebuchadnezzar wanted all of these captive men to eat the royal food and wine.
Daniel was determined not to defile himself so he asked permission of the chief of staff if he and his 3 friends could consume a different diet. The chief of staff was afraid that if he let them do this they would look unhealthy. This would cause disfavor with the King and result is their deaths.
So Daniel suggested a 10 day trail. All he and his 3 companions ate was a diet of vegetables and water. The chief of staff agreed. And according to Scripture,
“At the end of the ten days, Daniel and his three friends looked healthier and better nourished than the young men who had been eating the food assigned by the king.”
Now we don’t know exactly what this food was but it most likely was high fat and animal consumption with a small amount of vegetables, if any at all.
Daniel and his friend clearly outperformed all the other captives and won favor with the King.
What’s the Takeaway from the Original Whole30?
Consuming a diet that centers on plant based nutrition is a key factor in improving all areas of your health. I’ve never seen any study that doesn’t also show an increase in cognitive function when plant based nutrition is added to the diet.
I’m not saying that you have to go vegetarian or vegan.
But increasing your ability to consume plant based nutrition can go a long way to improving your health. For many this will also help you shed the unwanted weight that has the potential to trigger metabolic syndrome diseases like high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes. Just to name the big three.
