Last week I posted on how water is the best anti aging ingredient. Over the weekend I was in a training seminar on the microbiome and the use of water was again highlighted. However, lemon water was recommended over regular water.
If fact the person who taught the seminar said she had 135 reasons why you should use lemon water.
Well in today’s post I’m going to give you what I think are the 6 key benefits of lemon water. Ones that actually have scientifically backed facts to support their benefits.
So let me ask you a question:
“Would you try a drink that could improve your digestion, help detoxify you, rejuvenate your skin, boost your energy, and could even help you shed some pounds?”
If you answered “YES”, then please read the rest of this post.
Benefits of Lemon Water
In my question above I gave you 5 of the benefits of lemon water. I’ll save the last benefit for the end of this post.
Benefit 1 – Aids in Digestion: The molecular makeup of lemon juice is similar to your stomach’s digestive environment, which tricks your liver into producing bile. Bile helps move food through your gastrointenstinal tract.
Additionally, the acids found in lemon juice help to slow down the digestion of your food. This then slows the absorption of your nutrients to help stabilize your insulin levels.
Benefit 2 – Helps to Detoxify: Lemon water provides an environment that improves the enzymatic functions that take place in the small intestine. This does two things. Reduces the creation of toxins. And it stimulates your liver to help flush out toxins in your body.
Lemon water is a mild diuretic. This means you might be going to the bathroom to urinate more often. But this is a healthy problem as your kidneys and urinary tract are helping you get rid of toxins.
Benefit 3 – Helps Rejuvenate Your Skin: Not only does lemon water help remove toxins from your abdominal cavity but it also helps to detoxify your skin. Additionally the vitamin C found in lemon water helps to fight free radical damage. This provides protection to your skin.
Plus vitamin C aids in the production of collagen, which is essential in smoothing out lines and wrinkles in the face.
Benefit 4 – May Boost Your Energy: There is a field of molecular science that looks at atoms and molecules and how they effect energy. While this is difficult to understand we certainly see the results in the amount of energy contained in a hydrogen bomb.
Lemons provide your digestive tract with negative-charged ions, which stimulate an increase in energy production. This is best observed in the morning when you first get up. It might even allow you to skip the morning coffee.
Benefit 5 – Can Aid in Weight Management: Lemon water, when made properly, contains pectins, This is a dietary fiber fould in fruits. Pectin creates a satiating feeling, which helps you feel full longer. This reduces your hunger and your less likely to overeat.
To best harness this benefit start sipping your lemon water about 60 minutes prior to your lunch and dinner meals. This will help curb your appetite. You will then consume less calories to reduce your caloric intake. For many this will help them shed some pounds.
Best Practices for Making Lemon Water
Many people cut a slice of lemon and add it to ice cold water. This is the least effective way to enjoy the benefits of lemon water. Here are some best practices to get the most out of your lemon water:

-
Cut your lemon in half and squeeze the juice from the half lemon into your glass.
-
Add 8 to 16 ounces of room temperature water to your lemon juice.
-
Don’t add sugar or honey. Instead adjust the amount of water to taste.
-
Don’t gulp it down. Instead sip it over a 30 minute period to optimize your benefits.
-
Finally, if you want to obtain some of the polyphenols in the lemon skin, then add the half squeezed lemon to your water.
Final Benefit of Lemon Water
If you’re planning to reset your gut health then lemon water is an ideal drink to aid you in the process. In additional to all the benefits above, you will help provide an environment that will aid your good bacteria to rapidly colonize.
And as your lemon water removes toxins and helps foster enzymatic pathways that product beneficial compounds, this will help reduce inflammation in the small intestine to help heal a leaky gut.
One final note. We do not recommend using lemon juice or lemon oils. Instead always opt for fresh lemons to get the greatest benefit.
